The Start

Every Wednesday during the summer and early autumn sailing clubs on the Chesapeake Bay hold evening races, weather permitting. This past summer there were many days when races were called off because of threatening thunderstorms. The day I shot this start was quite different, almost no wind, just enough to fill the spinnakers for a close start. After the start the wind speed fell to almost nothing.

I on the otherhand had a good pot-luck dinner with members of a kayaking club back from a few hours of paddling on smooth water.

As the sun is rising in early December 2007, a lone sloop heads out of Back Creek into the Chesapeake Bay. At 7am there isn’t much wind, it’d be hard sailing. Could it be headed for warmer waters further south?
